What makes the Hans Wegner Chairs so
unique? The reason is probably behind the designer and his history. Hans Wegner
the designer was born in 1914 and was the son of a cobbler. He grew up learning
carpentry from a cabinet maker. He would later go on to making seats.
His cabinet making craft did not stop
even after leaving the man who was his apprentice. When he went to study Arts
in a Dutch university later on, he found himself in the company of other
cabinet makers. It was much later after his college years that he actually met
other designers like Arne Jacobsen and began making the seats.
His early apprenticeship under a cabinet
maker was instrumental in adapting the style that he used for Wegner the chair.
This seat which was once dubbed as the most beautiful chair in the world was
what made him famous. He incorporated elements that he learnt during his years
making cabinets.
His design of Hans Wegner chairs has been described as
functional and thoughtful. The designs were done to create a unique form, but
never compromised on functionality. The construction is explicit and the form
of the whole seat can be seen.
His aim was to strip all the outer covers
of the chair and leave it exposed. This would have been a challenge for the
design of Wegner the chair, if it were not for the unique Joinery that is used
to combine the back and the seat to create the unmistakable design that is very
popular today.
